ROXTON POND · Keep the original award intact

Explaining an institution’s changed name in a TN credential file

USAvisa field guide · 3 minute read Reviewed 7 September 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

Hypothetical example: for a Granby engineer, the name printed on a degree may differ from the institution’s current name. Explain the connection using reliable records while preserving the original document and the actual qualification. Use this guide to decide which fact must be proved before money is spent or travel is arranged. A TN request is limited to citizens of Canada or Mexico and also needs listed professional activity, the required qualifications, and a permissible employment arrangement. Hypothetical example: a prosthetist comparing a degree, a provincial registration, and a clinical-coordinator offer must separate an appealing plan from the record that actually establishes eligibility. The practical decision is whether the necessary evidence exists now, needs to be obtained, or points to a different route.

01

Identify what changed and what did not

A name change, merger or successor arrangement may need different evidence. Identify the original issuer, award date and reliable source connecting the records. Do not replace the institution’s name inside the credential or imply that a later institution issued an earlier award when that is not what the documents show. Start with a one-page fact list: the identity of the person or business, the claimed route, the condition that controls, and the source record. A first review should produce a clear yes, no, or unresolved result for each item. That makes the next decision concrete instead of leaving it to a general impression.

02

Keep the qualification analysis separate

The engineer listing permits a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or a state or provincial licence. Review the credential in relation to the actual professional duties and any separate U.S. practice rules. Degrees from institutions outside Canada, Mexico and the United States require reliable foreign-credential evaluation under the TN regulation; resolving a name difference does not replace that evaluation where required. Arrange documents in the order of the decision: source record, translation where required, transaction or employment proof, and a short explanation of any discrepancy. Preserve original dates and names. A later summary cannot quietly repair a missing link, and a private expectation cannot replace an official or contemporaneous record.

03

Translate faithfully and complete the TN checks

For documents submitted to USCIS, follow complete English translation and translator-certification requirements. Explain naming history outside a faithful rendering of the original. Confirm Canadian or Mexican citizenship, prearranged professional work, temporary entry and the actual employer arrangement. Sole or controlling ownership of the U.S. receiving enterprise constitutes prohibited TN self-employment even if a nominal supervisor is assigned. A Canadian citizen may apply for TN admission at a port of entry without obtaining a visa stamp, or the employer may use Form I-129 with USCIS. TD dependants may study but may not work. Sequence commitments only after the governing condition and decisive records are identified. Review material changes before relying on an earlier plan, and keep government charges, private advice, business spending, and travel costs distinct. The careful choice is often to obtain one missing document before making a commitment that the record cannot support.
