Your talent.A bigger stage.

Hypothetical example: a Granby engineer holds a degree from an institution whose name later changed. Preserve the original credential and explain the issuer’s identity with supporting evidence. Resolving the name does not replace the separate review of the degree, proposed engineering duties and TN employment arrangement. TN preparation works best when it produces a duty-to-profession comparison before a travel decision. Put the selected profession, citizenship proof, qualification route, employer, actual duties, and temporary period in one short review sheet. That sheet identifies the record that settles each issue and makes it harder to use a broad job title as a substitute for professional activity. Use the review sheet as a decision tool: it should show what can be proved today, what needs confirmation, and which commitment must wait. That discipline prevents a later explanation from being asked to repair a fact that should have been documented before the route was selected. Before acting, name the next verifiable step and the document that will confirm it. This turns preparation into a measured decision rather than an assumption that an attractive plan will answer an independent legal condition. Keep that decision log with the file so later changes can be compared with the evidence available when the route was chosen.

01

Establish the issuer without rewriting the degree

Use the institution’s records or other reliable evidence to connect the former and current names. Distinguish a simple name change from a merger or another event whose effect needs explanation. Do not issue an unofficial replacement credential. If the degree is from an institution outside Canada, Mexico or the United States, the TN regulation requires a reliable foreign-credential evaluation. Match each responsibility to the selected profession. A detailed signed employer letter, the relevant credential record, and a direct description of the assignment normally resolve more than a title alone. Review ownership early: a nominal supervisor cannot cure an arrangement in which the applicant actually owns or controls the U.S. receiving business.

02

Apply the engineer qualification and duties

The engineer listing provides a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or a state or provincial licence. A requirement to be licensed for particular U.S. practice is a separate question. Explain the actual professional duties and credential relationship rather than assuming every role containing engineer qualifies or every name discrepancy defeats the case. The first review should show who will direct the work, pay for it, and receive its benefit. That factual arrangement, rather than a phrase in a contract, determines whether the professional activity is genuinely prearranged employment. Where a licence is relevant to practice, keep that regulatory question separate from the immigration credential question.

03

Retain citizenship and the real employment arrangement

TN requires Canadian or Mexican citizenship, qualifying prearranged professional activity in a listed profession, that profession’s own qualification rule and temporary entry. The employer may be U.S. or foreign, but working for a U.S. receiving enterprise the applicant solely owns or controls is prohibited TN self-employment. Disclose ownership and control rather than relying on a nominal supervisor to change that result. A Canadian citizen may apply at a port of entry without a visa stamp, or a U.S. employer may file Form I-129; TD dependants may study but may not work. Sequence qualification and identity evidence first, the employment arrangement second, and the travel or petition choice third. A Canadian citizen may request TN at inspection or preclearance, while an employer may submit Form I-129 to USCIS. TN is temporary professional authorization and does not permit self-employment for a U.S. business the applicant owns or controls.
