TN paperwork when the job title and the profession disagree

THE SHORT ANSWER

A TN file is short, and every page in it has to point at the same profession. Proof of Canadian or Mexican citizenship, a support letter describing professional duties and naming the listed profession, and the credential that profession's own entry demands. Where the title on the letter and the tasks underneath it disagree, the tasks decide, and the letter should be rewritten before travel rather than explained at the counter.

01

Start from the tasks and work upward

Hypothetical example: Ophélie forecasts frost risk for berry and orchard growers around Saint-Joachim-de-Shefford and is offered a role by an American agricultural service whose letter calls her a regional operations lead. Meteorologist sits on the treaty list; regional operations lead does not, and no listed profession is described by that phrase. The correct move is to ask the employer to rewrite the letter around what she will actually do, which is running forecast models and interpreting station data. That is not cosmetic editing. If the honest description of the work is coordination and scheduling, then rewriting the letter would be a misrepresentation and the answer is that TN does not fit this role, however well she is qualified for a different one.

02

Match the credential to the entry, and translate it properly

Once the profession is settled, the qualification line under it governs. Produce the degree or the licence that line names, in its original form, with a certified and complete translation where the document is in French. Partial translations and summaries are refused routinely, and the delay is entirely avoidable. Where the credential was issued outside Canada, Mexico or the United States, an evaluation from a recognised service is what the regulation contemplates, and it should be ordered weeks ahead because these take time and cannot be expedited by paying more. A provincial licence, if one is held, is worth including even where the entry asks only for a degree, since it corroborates the professional character of the work.

03

Decide the route before booking anything

Canadian citizens ordinarily seek TN admission from a CBP officer at a land port of entry or a preclearance facility, without a visa, presenting the file in person. The alternative is for the U.S. employer to file Form I-129 in advance, which suits a start date that cannot absorb a refusal or an employer that wants an approval in hand. Mexican citizens ordinarily use the consular visa process instead. Choose the route with the employer rather than assuming, and remember that permanent residence in Canada is not citizenship: a PR card cannot support a TN application no matter how long it has been held. Family members travel as TD dependants, who may study but may not work.
